List 4 Section 301 Duties Effective September 1

8/1/19

On Thursday, August 1, 2019, President Trump announced that the U.S. will be imposing a 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, effective September 1.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, President Trump said, “We thought we had a deal with China three months ago, but sadly, China decided to re-negotiate the deal prior to signing.” Trump said that China agreed to purchase agricultural product from the U.S .and did not do so. China also agreed to stop the sale of Fentanyl to the U.S., but never stopped.

The President explained that trade negotiations are continuing and the U.S. will impose “a small additional Tariff of 10% on the remaining 300 Billion Dollars of goods and products coming from China into our Country.”

Trump’s announcement of additional tariffs comes one day after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert E. Lighthizer finished two days of negotiations in Shanghai. The United States and China have been negotiating trade talks for over a year and a half.

The imposition of tariffs on the $300 billion worth of Chinese imports will effectively tax every product imported from China. This will affect trade and transportation. Please contact your Norman Krieger representative to plan accordingly.
