ILWU Work Stoppages Shut Down West Coast Ports

On Friday June, 2, 2023 the Port of Oakland, Oakland International Container Terminal (OITC), reported a work stoppage. As reported by the American Journal of Transportation, the OITC stated, “OICT will not be working today 6.2.23 on the first shift. We are not sure, at this time, when normal work will resume. We are not being provided International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) labor at this time. We will provide updated information as it becomes available.” The stoppage was projected to last through Saturday. CNBC reported two of the Oakland port marine terminals — SSA, its largest, and TraPac — were closed as of the morning shift on Friday. Robert Bernardo, spokesman for the Port of Oakland states, “the majority of imports and exports are processed through those terminals.” Further significant impacts to the supply chain are expected as a result of this shut down. Over 2,100 trucks go through the Port of Oakland terminals daily, however none are expected through Saturday with insufficient labor to serve the trucks. KRIEGER Worldwide experts expect to see additional delays and disruptions as a result of these work stoppages and trucking delays.

The American Journal of Transportation also reported “The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is staging a ‘hit and miss’ series of job actions this morning, June 2nd according to a source located at the Port of Los Angeles.” A source reported “spotty with the steadies arriving at work but not casuals so that it is a hit and miss situation at marine terminals at Los Angeles and Long Beach this morning.”

The ILWU Local 13 representing longshore workers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach issued a statement on June 2, 2023: “the rank and file members of the Southern California ILWU has taken it upon themselves to voice their displeasure with the ocean carriers and terminal operators’ position. However, cargo operations in the ports continue as longshore workers remain on the job to move the nation’s cargo, as they have done valiantly for decades.”
